Young Family Portrait

The older couple in the center is David James Carlough and Maria May. While next to their grandchildren are their daughter and son-in-law, Maria Amelia Carlough (upper right corner) and Judson Young (in between Anna and Maria Amelia). The couple off to the left of them is their grandson and his wife, John Frank Young (upper left corner) and Anna Jane Bodine (next to John Frank). The children in the picture are Anna and John's children which make them Maria Amelia and Judson's grandchildren, and David and Maria May's great-grandchildren, Frank (center) and Mildred (bottom right). As you can see in this picture it is a family photo of four generations of Carloughs. Maria May is the only one smiling while holding a bible in her hand.

David James Carlough

David James Carlough was born on February 20, 1813 in Masonicus, New Jersey. He married Maria May on March 26, 1836 in Upper Saddle River, New Jersey. They had five children together Jacob Carlough (1840-1907), Margaret Jan Carlough Hopper (1843-1912), Catherine Matilda Carlough Straut (1848-1931), Maria Amelia Carlough Young (1850-1938), and John George Carlough (1854-1939). He was married to Maria May for 56 years before she passed away in 1895 at the age of 78. They had 10 grandchildren all together, and seemed to be a pretty happy couple. David died at the age of 93 years old on August 17, 1906 and is buried in the Airmont Lutheran Cemetery in Suffern, New York.

Maria and Judson

Maria Amelia “Minnie” Carlough was born on October 28, 1850 in New Jersey to David James and Maria May Carlough. Maria Amelia married Judson Young, and together they lived on a farm on the outskirts of Tallman, New York. Judson was a carpenter and a farmer until he entered the US Army in 1864, and served in the Civil War at the Battle of Wilderness. He was then wounded captured, imprisoned then released in Richmond, Virginia. Maria Amelia and Judson Young had four children together John Franklin Young (1850-1938), Daisy May Young (1877-1965), Lydia A. Young (1882-1883), and Jennie Young (1884-1885). Judson passed away in 1929 at the age of 84, and Maria Amelia died on April 7, 1938 in New York at the age of 88. They left behind two children and six grandchildren. They are both buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Ramapo, New York.

Anna and John

John Frank Young was born on January 20, 1871 in Tallman, New York to Maria Amelia “Minnie” and Judson Young. John Franklin married Anna Jane Bodine on February 22, 1893 during a snowstorm by Anna Jane Bodine’s father. The picture of Anna and her husband, John was most likely taken around 1893 close to when they were first married. Together they had six children Violet “Ruth” Young (1894-1925), Alta Marie Young (1897-1977), Mildred Annette Young (1899-1974), John Judson Young (1901-1960), Freda Mae Young (1903-1996), and J. Frank Young (1905-1960). John Franklin died at the age 34 on January 28, 1905 in Rockland County, New York. He passed away almost a month before their last son was born, and that is why he is named after his father. Anna Jane Bodine Young died on March 16, 1952 at the age of 85 in Rockland County, New York. She left behind five of her children and seven grandchildren.

Bessie Morriss and Dolly Scofield, 1910s

This photo is of Bessie Morriss and Dolly Scofield enjoying a day at the beach. There is writing on the back of the photograph that says "Grandmother Morris and friend. (Dolly Scofield) NY." The photo is black and white. The swimwear is black and covers the entire body from the chest to the knees, and the tops are connected to the bottoms. The outfits also consist of tall socks and caps. The collars of the swimsuits are white with black stripes. The swimsuits are in between early 1900s-style and 1920s-style. There are people sitting on the ground in the background, and the men's hats are the style from the 1910s. Bessie Morriss was born around 1887 and lived in Ho-Ho-Kus. She worked as an assistant railroad agent, and had two children, Henrietta and Charles.
