Maps of Brakeshoe

This is a Map of the American Brakeshoe plant done by Sandborn Insurance. The map was originally drafted for insurance purposes in 1925, but was updated until 1951. Notably, the Mahwah Brakeshoe plant is just off Ramapo Valley road, and was near the Ramapo river. The plant however was next to a river called Masonicus Brook. There also used to be a pond near the plant as well, but it is now currently drained and is a field. However the railroad tracks are still there. Railroad tracks played a crucial role for the placement American Brakeshoe Foundry in Mahwah. When the plant was being built in the early 1900s, new railroad tracks were added to main Mahwah train route just for the foundry. This allowed for easy transport of materials for American Brakeshoe, especially to areas such as Patterson. Roads were also constructed near the Foundry to assist in the needs of the factory. Brakeshoe Place was a road that many workers of the Foundry lived on for example, allowing for workers to have an easy commute to work. The close up views of the map provide more detail of the factory and the surrounding roads. You can find the individual buildings of the factory as well, such as the sand casting cleaning building, where photographer F.S. Lincoln took the company photo of Ernest Busch cleaning a casting mold with air.
